A logo is the face of your company. It stands for your longevity and for your brand promise. Eventually, your logo will BE your company. A question for you; what is the first thing that pops up in your mind when you think of Mcdonald's? It's the golden arches, right? No matter if you like their hamburgers or not, you always think of their logo first. This is the sign of a good logo and good marketing. 

Usually, a logo is part of a logo set. A logo set contains of a letterform, a logotype or logomark, and a signature.

A letterform is a design unique for your brand, like the U made of symbols in Unilever, or the M (Golden Arc) for McDonald's. A logotype is the name, like the swirly CocaCola in white on red background, or Google. A logomark is the symbol, like the blue bird for Twitter.  A signature is everything put together: your logomark, your name, and your tagline. Included in this would be a certain font pairing that would work perfectly for you and a 2-5 colour scheme that would be used in your logo set.
